I didn't particularly like that decision. Image - that's what it all boils down to nowadays.

The whole ceremony was about presentation, sucks she wasnt "pretty" enough for it, she should have gotten credit for the song and thats it.

They never planned on letting just one of the girls participate in it. All 3 of the girls up for the position featured in the opening ceremony. The "ugly" girl had stage fright, and was informed well in advance that she would not be appearing on stage. The other girl, while her voice was still beautiful, it was not as strong, but she had the presence on stage that was required. The other girl was deemed too old (10 years old) for the appearance, but all three were credited for the performance. Yang Peiyi was never told that she was ugly, and Lin Maioke was never a last minute replacement. None of the girls were damaged by the ordeal, they're all very proud of what they have done for their country. This rumour that the western media latched onto started at the Voice of America, which is a propaganda tool for the US government.

Americans seem to be bitter about the whole Beijing Olympics paying attention to every single detail to talk about it. I have been hearing complain after complain from americans: "Oh, why spend so much money on all that instead of erasing poverty?...Imagine the discipline all the people on the ceremony had to go through, so inhuman!...Athletes are too young..." complain after complain trying to take credit away from the beauty of the ceremony, olympic park, etc.

On top of that, they value golds silvers and bronzes equally just so that they can come above China in the tables. It's pathetic.

Yeah, huh? China won the most gold medals . I keep seeing all this articles around about negative stuff about the olympics in China. Oh well, I think the ceremonies were beautiful, awesome venues, etc.

there was a reason the olympics are being boycotted by so many people, that and it's boring as all hell
yes, there was - and it wasn't this. I can't believe that people are getting outraged about this news story of all things.
